Steps in Keyword Research

As mentioned in previous articles, choosing the right keywords is a vital part of SEO strategy.  There are 4 steps you need to undergo when searching for keywords.

Do these steps in keyword research and you will be in the right starting track of your SEO.

Step 1  Pick your primary keywords using Google's Keyword Tool or other tool that you maybe using.

Go to http://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.  Enter your most powerful keyword in the box and hit "Search".

Step 2  From the search results choose a handful (about 30 keywords) of related keywords based on competition and number of global searches.  The higher the number of search and the less tough the competition, the higher is your chance to optimize a keyword or phrase.

Step 3   Determine the commercial intent of your keywords if you are targeting for sales.  To do this, put your keywords one at a time into MSN's http://adlab.msn.com/Online-Commercial-Intention/Default.aspx.  Copy the result into a spreadsheet until you finished all the keywords.

Oddly enough, MSN tool only allows one keyword for checking at one time.  If it's rather boring to you or want to save time, there's a free downloadable tool that lets you check the commercial intents of all your keywords in a single time.

Take note though that  http://download.cnet.com/Keyword-Commercial-Intent- Tool-for-AdWords-PPC/3000-2650_4-10891901.html only works for PC.

Step 4  Finally, pick at least 12 best keywords based on combinations of low competition, large searches (both from results of Step 2) and high commercial intent (from Step 3).

There are your most powerful keywords.  Make use of them in your contents and start seeing yourself rising in the search engine ranks.

Keyword Research is one of the 5 Important SEO Tasks.  Check out the other 4 here.
