4 Backlinking Mistakes You Should Avoid

Backlinking is a great way to drive traffic to a website and is one of the best free SEO techniques that most SEOers use. All you have to do is go into a site, write a simple comment, leave your link and it's done. You've just got a link back to your site.

While it is free and easy to do,backlinking is also the most misused among the various SEO techniques. And few realize that the search engines spiders like Google, Yahoo and Bing know when you are misusing it and before long, you're back below the search engines pages and you will have to start all over again.

If you want your links to stay long, avoid this 4 backlinking mistakes:

1. Grabbing Every Link Possible. Most black hat SEOers will encourage you to leave your links in every forum and blog. I disagree. The blogs and forums you comment on should always be at least related to your site. This will give a higher chance for your links to stay for a longer time.

2.  Leaving Nonsense Comments.  Commenting is very easy but still requires some degree of intelligence.  If you go there and give a comment that does not fit the post being commented on at all, the comments moderator will see this and he/she will assume that you do not know what you are talking about and your comment will be trashed.

3. Targeting "Do-Follows" Only. As a freelancer for one of the leading work at home sites, I have seen many job postings by employers and sub-contractors who require backlinks from "do-follow" sites only. I personally believe that leaving your links to "do-follow" only is not natural to do and even unnecessary. The worst scenario if you overdo it is for you to be banned from the search engines.

4. Using Common "Spam Phrases". Maybe it's not your intention but sometimes you can no longer think of anything to say but "Nice post!" or "Your site rocks!" These phrases are related to spammers who usually use automated software to post hundreds and thousands of links across the internet. Like in #2, the moderator will throw your comment in the garbage can and so does your link.

Now you know that you might be doing your backlinking strategy all wrong.
